A Masterpiece Feeding the Soul
This past weekend I had the privileged of viewing some marvelous creations by artists from our area high schools. It was awesome and inspiring to see into the hearts and souls of these young people through their works of art. The talent and gifts exhibited truly blew me away.
While I have had no formal training or instruction, I have always loved to draw and even went through a period of trying my hand at painting. While I have always loved art it has never been my passion; therefore, it’s never had a place of prominence in my life. Yet, it has still managed to weave in and out of my life over the years.
Luckily, when my girls were young, I happened to be in a phase that painting or some form of creating was almost a daily occurrence. So, it wasn’t uncommon to have one or both of them working next to me on their own creations. And like me, as they got older, the art and creating wouldn’t hold a prominent place in their lives as school, dance, sports and other activities began to carve away at any available time to sit and create. Such was the case until approximately two years ago, after a very trying year, something beautiful happened, and there was room for creating once again. After a string of challenging events during her freshman year of high school, my oldest daughter retreated to her room, cranked up her music and began to draw. What happened next was truly inspiring. She had a tablet of sketches that made my jaw drop. But that wasn’t the real beauty of this night. The beautiful thing is that she was changed – there was a peace about her and it was truly well with her soul. It was then that I realized art feeds her soul. And it has been a magical thing to witness ever since! Anytime she is down or stressed and she is able to take time to create, she emerges a changed person.
No matter how great things are, life can get rough. I believe we all need to take a break, re-charge and feed our souls daily. But first, we must identify what feeds our individual soul? Whether it’s a praying, taking a walk, reading a book, art, music or something else, identifying what brings peace to our own lives is critical and knowing what feeds our soul can be life-changing! For it’s in those moments that something amazing happens. We are transformed. And the result…a true masterpiece any time we can say, “it is well with my soul
